The Character

The Water Nymph

Nesaia is a Nereid, one of the fifty daughters of Nereus, the old man of the sea. Every wave that rolls onto a shore whispers of her sisters; every pearl that shimmers from a shell holds their gleam.

The palaces of living coral, the mother-of-pearl, the amber paths and the crystals with their soft and endless light — all of that she has left behind for the world in between: between forest and water, between sea and air. She listens to the elements, and she answers them. At the harbour her accordion gives back the old sailors’ songs; on the riverbank the melodies turn quiet and full of longing.

When night falls her fireflies gather around her, small charms of good fortune circling everyone she favours. They say more than one seafarer has lost their way because of her — and more than one has found it again.
